LINGAYEN, Pangasinan - A seven-year old chess sensation from Rosales town here with a mind of a genius will be among the youthful representatives of the country who will see action in the World Youth Chess Championship scheduled October 19-29 in Georgia, a former part of the old Soviet Union.
Samantha Glo C. Revita, a Grade I pupil at the Rosales North Central School, earned the ticket to that world tournament when she made a creditable performance inthe 7th Asean Age Group Chess Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia from June 10-20, 2006 where she earned the silver in blitz chess and bronze in the standard chess.
Her father Sammy, a civil, geodetic and sanitary engineer who molded her daughter to have the heart of a champion since she was three years and nine months, said in the Asean Group Tournament, Samantha Glo vowed to tougher Vietnamese players as she did not have time to prepare.
He said with only few days of rest after winning the brain-cracking national tournament, Samantha Glo was immediately whisked into that tournament in Jakarta.
Born Aug. 9, 1999 in Baguio City, Samantha Glo is the second of three children of Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Revita, nee Gloria P. Cruz, a school teacher. The couple’s other children are Ria, 11; and Nazareen, 5.
Although ranged against among the toughest chess player in the country of her age and only in her second year of competition, Samantha Glo was no push-over during the National Age Chess Championship held in Mandaluyong City from May 27 to June 3 this year.
She confessed that her toughest opponent in that tournament was Hannah Paragua, seven-year old kid sister of Super Grandmaster Mark Paragua, whom she automatically defeated, thus earning her a trip to Jakarta, Indonesia.
Taught to play chess by her father at the tender age of three years and nine months, she went to win over young and adults alike in the neighborhood, said her father Sammy, younger brother of Rosales Mayor Ricardo Revita.
Sammy said while he taught chess to her daughter, the girl now often defeats him both in blitz and standard chess.
At the tender age of six while she was still in kindergarten, she was champion in Rosales’ Zone I Meet in August 2005; chamion in the Private Schools Athletic Association Zone 3 Meet in Sta. Maria town from Oct. 7-8, 2005; champion in PRISAA Pangasinan 2 Division Meet in Binalonan from Dec. 1-2, 2005; and placed second in the Ilocos Region Athletic Association meet in Dec. 2006.
In her trip to the World Youth Chess Championship where she would be facing the best chess player around the globe as young as she is, Samantha Glo said she is excited but a little bit nervous.
Dreaming to be a flight stewardess someday, Samantha confessed her favorite subjects are Mathematics and Science, perhaps inheriting it from her father Sammy, an engineer and her mother, a public school teacher.
Gov. Victor Agbayanii called Samantha Glo another whiz kid from Pangasinan who is set to make a name for her own self as well as for the province in world chess. (PNA)
