3rd Hundred Islands global homecoming on

The City of Alaminos will again be celebrating its annual City Fiesta dubbed as 2008 Hundred Islands Global Homecoming (HIGH) from March 14-18, 2008.

The festivity is in honor of Saint Joseph, the city’s patronal saint.

With the theme, “Baley Co, Aroen Co… Gali La” (Bayan Ko, Mahalin Ko, Halika Na), the celebration indicates the strong resolve, overwhelming support and unwavering commitment of Alaminians all over the world in realizing a more sustainable, livable, peaceful, progressive and green city of the Hundred Islands and ultimately contribute to the nation’s development.

Mayor Hernani A. Braganza, along with other city officials, local folks and various organizations has lined up activities to make this year’s celebration more significant, joyous, and memorable.

The celebration commences with the Grand Civic and Military Parade that include the colorful barangay floats and the candidates for Mr.  & Miss Little Hundred Islands 2008 on March 14.

It will be shortly followed by the Drum and Bugle Corp and Drum and Lyre exhibitions in front of the Nepo Mart.

The Agri-Trade Fair will also be formally opened at C.P. Garcia St. along with the First Invitational Cyber Games Tournament at the Don Leopoldo Sison Auditorium (DSLA).

The Diocese of Alaminos leads some religious activities starting with the Blessing Rites and Prayers of the Archbishop on the same day.

The Feast of Saint Joseph will also be celebrated with a procession of the image of the patronal saint around the city’s central business on March 15.

A Thanksgiving Mass on March 19 at Saint Joseph Cathedral will be the culminating activity of this year’s religious celebration.

Highlighting the opening day celebration is the food feast by noontime at the San Jose Drive (SJD), going to Lucap Wharf, with the city government as the gracious host.

Also known as the “Salo-Salo: A Pasasalamat of Business Community & City Employees”, the said initiative the city’s humble way of returning the favor to the local folks in the barangays for their ready and warm hospitality tendered to every guest every time they celebrate their fiestas.

The Salo-Salo likewise strengthens the bond that unites Alaminians from all of the city’s 39 barangays.

There will also be a Grand Inihaw Festival and Eat-for-a-Cause Project from 4 PM to 7 o’clock in the evening, again at SJD.

Guests and visitors taking part in all the fun-filled activities need not to go far to satisfy their hunger. With just a minimum P 5 they could have simple snacks like lugaw (porridge), bilo-bilo and other delicacies.

Best of all, they could even contribute big to the city’s cause.

Proceeds of this laudable project will go along way for the benefit of the city’s residents as the city government plans to purchase a new ambulance for the swifter delivery of quality healthcare services to the communities.

Donations coming from business groups, government employees, balikbayans and other benevolent entities were used in buying ingredients and in preparing the economical snacks.

Members of Kilusan ng mga Kababaehan para sa Kaunlaran (KKK) have earlier volunteered to prepare, cook and serve the hot snacks to the fun-seekers for the entire duration of the fiesta.

Sports activities were also scheduled starting with the 4th Invitational 9-Ball Challenge on the 14th, and the 4th Invitational Chess Tournament coinciding with the 2nd Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament on March 15.

The traditional Longganisa Festival Street Dancing Competition will likewise not be missed.

On March 16th, the first-ever 4X4 Racing Competition and the Rock-rakan Mountain Bike Challenge will kick-off at the at the Adopt-A-Mountain Project site and in front of the city hall, respectively.

An afternoon of world class boxing matches also await local boxing aficionados as the city government secured a pay per view rights for the Pacquiao-Marquez II World Super Featherweight Championship fight also on the same date.

While, hundreds of Alaminian families test their mettle in the Laro ng Lahi during the Family Day celebration at the Plaza Marcelo Ochave.

For other the social and cultural activities, different shows and programs are set to unfold such as the cultural show and folk dance competition, a dog show, and bingo social as well as the long-running Family Trade House Corporation Amateur Singing Contest and the SK Battle of the Bands.

There will also be an array of evening affairs and gatherings for various groups. These include the nightly People’s Party, Children’s Magical Night, Barangay Night, Transport and Market Vendors Night, Balikbayan Night, the Grand Ball Night and Cocktails with Balikbayans and Photo Exhibit.

Another first is the Gay-Olympics which kick-starts on March 16 at DLSA.

Cute, bubbly and witty kids will also take center stage as they vie for Mr. and Ms. Little Hundred Islands 2008. Pageant and coronation night will be on March 17, also at DLSA.

Now on its third straight year, HIGH is expected to be the grandest and biggest ever as it aims to further promote Alaminos as a major business and tourism hub in Northern Luzon. (CIO)
