LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – A transport chaos was expected to greet the new officials of Dagupan taking over the reins of the city government last Saturday in view of the closure that day of the privately-owned Dagupan City Holding Area, a big terminal for all passenger vehicles, from jeepneys to mini-buses and commuter vans.

A letter dated June 22, 2007 sent by the manager of Gotesco Investment, Inc., owner of the former Pantranco Terminal property on M.H. del Pilar Street here being rented by a private group to become the holding area of vehicles indicates on what is going to happen as the new administration begins its reign.

The letter signed by Joseph Aragon, manager of Gotesco Investment, Inc. informed Noel Melecio, Mel Balolong and Jesus Cañeja (now deceased) that his company is now terminating the permit issued to them effective June 30, 2007.

The letter further demanded the trio to vacate the premises after the prescribed period. Read more

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – Malaris is now under control in Pangasinan with only 11 persons afflicted by the disease last year, a report of the Provincial Health Office on Tuesday stated.

Dr. Ana Ma. Theresa de Guzman, assistant provincial health officer, said records show that those afflicted came from only four towns that are still affected by malaria, namely Infanta, Mabini, Aguilar and Mangatarem, all in the western part of the province.

The province of Pangasinan comprises 44 towns and four cities.

“Actually, malaria is a disease which we can consider s totally controlled in Pangasinan as of today,” Dr. De Guzman said.

She said there are two kinds of malaria – the falcicarum malaria and the plasmodium malaria, such as the type found in the province of Palawan before. Read more

DAGUPAN CITY – The police on Monday destroyed in public 27 video gambling machines it confiscated from various parts of the city to prove its sincerity in wiping out this form of illegal gambling affecting the youth.

With members of the media watching, Supt. Edgar Basbas, chief of police, and Supt. Ricardo Tamayo, police deputy provincial director, used  hammers to pulverize all these gadgets, including their respective mother boar5ds, into pieces.

Basbas said the gadgets were seized in canteens and residential houses near schools where they are again mushrooming as soon as the classes opened last week.

Parents called on the local police to get rid of these video gambling machines because it is in these gadgets where their children are betting their allowances instead of buying food for their snacks. Read more

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – A total of 68 suspected cases of dengue fever had already been recorded in Pangasinan from January to June 25 this year, according to a report of the Provincial Health Office.

Assistant Provincial Health Office Ana Ma. Theresa de Guzman said on Tuesday that on record, two persons already died from all these suspected cases.  These are an eight year old boy from Dasol and another, a 16 year old boy from Lingayen.

De Guzman said there were two deaths due to dengue, although these are yet to be confirmed by the submission of their respective death certificates by the Sacred heart Hospital in Urdaneta City, where they died.

Of the 68 suspected dengue cases registered so far, none of it was confirmed yet, De Guzman said. Read more

DAGUPAN CITY – All the 16 policemen of San Manuel town, including their chief, had been relieved as of Monday as an aftermath of the slaying last June 20 of that town’s Vice Mayor Bonie Apilado.

Supt. Ricardo Tamayo, deputy police provincial director for administration, told newsmen here on Thursday that Inspector Realito Rodriguez, chief of police, and all his men were replaced by members of the elite Provincial Mobile Group (PMG) and the Regional Mobile Group (RMG).

Rodriguez and his men were ordered to report to the Police Provincial Office in Lingayen for re-training. Read more

DAGUPAN CITY – Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz has reiterated his desire to retire before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.

Already 73 years old in November this year, Cruz said he filed his retirement papers with the Vatican way back in 2001 but so far no action was made on the matter up to this time.

“I reiterated my request. I guess, Rome will soon grant my long standing request sooner,” said Cruz, former president of the influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, in a talk over a radio station in Dagupan.

He said his request to retire before reaching the age of 75 stems from his desire to give way to younger priests the chance to occupy higher positions in the Catholic Church. Read more

No lead yet in slaying of Pangasinan vice mayor

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – Investigators are still facing a blank wall in connection with the slaying of outgoing San Manuel Vice Mayor Bonie Apilado, 35, and the wounding of his driver Ricardo Clemente, 24, along the Maharlika highway in barangay San Vicente in Urdaneta City on Wednesday afternoon.

However, investigation by members of Task Force Apilado formed by Police Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez immediately after the slaying is still going on.

Members of the task force include those from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the intelligence and investigation branch of the Pangasinan Police Office, the PNP Crime Laboratory and the Urdaneta City and San Manuel Police.

Investigation showed Vice Mayor Apilado was talking with an owner of a car aircon shop when a lone gunman approached from behind and opened fire. Read more

ASINGAN, Pangasinan – The acetylene gang struck again in Pangasinan when they entered a pawnshop here on Saturday dawn and carted away cash and jewelry estimated to be around P3.5 million.

Investigation showed the culprits victimized the Waki Pawnshop at the Asingan Public Market owned by Lito Quintero, a resient of Carusocan Norte in Asingan.

The police said the perpetrators gained entry into the pawnshop from nearby stall by destroying its double-steel plate ceiling with the use of acetylene torch.

While inside the pawnshop, the suspect opened the vault with the use of instruments from where they took away cash, jewelry and other valuable items.

Policemen who rushed to the crime scene after being called at 9:15 a.m. that day, found a hand drill with five drill bits, one saw, one bolt cutter, one big screw driver, eight destroyed padlocks, one portable acetylene apparatus with tanks, one pliers, two steel bars, cloth, one igniter, one flash light and two cutters.
